10 Diego Vitagliano – website→

10 Diego Vitagliano has been awarded the 2nd best pizzeria in all of Italy — the best in Naples, by the prestigious 50 top pizza 2021. At pizza chef Diego’s two locations, in Pozzuoli and Bagnoli, he turns out light and highly digestible pizza, with the perfect crispiness. The menu, which is based on tradition, thrills with his clever touches and modern techniques, and use of local products —including organic grains of all sorts. And what’s more, he offers a gluten-free menu that has received great praise and prestigious awards on its own. The sfizi are a must-try to begin the meal, like the ‘frittatina di aglio e olio —crispy fried pasta balls with garlic and oil and a corn flake crust. The pizza ‘marinara sbagliata’ (incorrect marinara), made with San Marzano tomatoes DOP, wild garlic pesto and oregano is a great choice, as is the ‘pizza croccante,’ —Diego’s popular new creation. The pizza is baked in two different ovens and temperatures, creating an almost focaccia like pizza, but crispy, light and airy (photo below). La Notizia – Enzo Coccia – website→

Located in the Vomero district, La Notizia is a favourite place among the Neapolitans, who not only go for the top-rate pizza, and all the delicious else, but also for the warm, friendly ambiance and great service. Pizza chef Enzo Coccia serves up masterfully made pizza with highest-quality ingredients from all over the Campania region, and offers a fine selection of toppings that are utterly irresistibly —like the pizza San Gennaro, which is topped with yellow piennolo tomatoes, oregano, garlic, anchovies, black olives, garlic, and basil. If you’re in the mood for a calzone, Enzo’s are among the very best in the city, sure to keep your taste buds salivating with every single bite. And his “Mpustarelle” (rustic sandwiches), like the “Marenna,” which is filled with sautéed broccoli rabe, oozy provola cheese, and meaty slices of roast pork, are so hearty and delicious, that they actually warrant their own unique shop and celebrity. Concettina ai Tre Santi is considered one of the best places to eat pizza in Naples, and in Italy too. Here forth generation pizza chef, Ciro Oliva, has transformed his families nearly 70-year-old pizzeria into a cool and contemporary place that bustles with hungry customers eagerly awaiting a taste of his excellently made pizza. The best option for first-timers is to go for one of the classics; a pizza Margherita or marinara, to fully appreciate Ciro’s excellence and the results of a perfectly leavened dough, and all the juicy, tomato, delicious rest. Tuck into Starita a Materdei for one of the city’s most legendary pizza dining experiences —complete with authenticity in every bite; taste, aroma, and texture. Master pizzaiolo Antonio Starita is celebrated on the city streets as he’s one of the pioneers of the art of true Neapolitan pizza making (vera pizza Napoletana). Family run since 1901, customers can count on a menu composed of many delicious options to choose from—real-deal Napoli pizza. Must-try the angioletti (fried pizza dough) with cherry tomatoes and rucola to start the meal (or, if you have a sweet tooth, covered in nutella for a delicious ending) —the pizza montanara is one of the best in the city and so is the pizza marinara —my absolute favorite. Arrive early or prepare for long waits. Open daily from Tuesday to Sunday for lunch from 12 noon to 3:30 pm, dinner from 7 pm to 11:30 pm, closed Mondays, Via Materdei, 27/28, 80136 Napoli NA, tel: 39 081 544 1485 – $$

Jot down the name of this historic place, if you want to eat at one of the most famous pizzeria’s in Naples. The choice of toppings are exclusively the classic marinara and Margherita, and Margherita doppio (double) mozzarella, nothing more, and no-one is complaining. The pizza turned out in this place is that mouthwateringly good. Plan for a long wait, which I can assure will be justified and soon forgetten after just one bite of this deservedly celebrated pizza. Open daily from 12 noon to 2:30 pm, 7-10 pm. Via Cesare Sersale, 1, 80139 NA, tel: 39 081 553 9204 –$$

Carmnella – Vincenzo Esposito – website→

Walking into this cozy pizza place one quickly gets a sense of home and tradition, with Master pizza maker Vincenzo Esposito next to his hot oven spinning up fragrant pies and a room full of locals eagerly awaiting what’s to come. Vincenzo’s pizza’s pay homage to “Antica Passione,” the over 130 year old passions of his family and their devotion to the art of true Neapolitan pizza making. He is a die-hard traditionalist, which can be appreciated in every pie —from the beloved classics; the pizza Margherita and pizza Marinara (which has an entire page of delicious offerings on its own), including my favorites, the “pizza marinara con salami” and the “pizza Marinareca,” topped with pureed tomatoes, flaked tuna, capers from Salina, black Gaeta olives, garlic, oregano, and evoo. Other specialties include the “pizza Elena Ferrante,” topped with a long simmered ragù, small meatballs, fior di latte, ricotta, basil, and evoo —and his “pizza Munaciello,” a traditional Neapolitan stuffed pizza with provola affumicato, ricotta, parmigiano cheese aged 36 months, ciccioli,  puree of tomatoes, basil, black pepper, and evoo. Open daily from 12 noon to 3 pm, 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm, closed Sundays, Via Marino Cristoforo, 22, 80142, NA, tel: 39 081 553 7425 – $$

Vincenzo Capuano – website →

Known for his “Pizza Gourmet,” third generation pizza chef, Vincenzo Capuano, has been taking the pizza world by storm. He serves up traditional Neapolitan pizza, but with an extra light, well-leavened dough that produces an exaggeratedly fluffy crust and a smaller pizza surface, which he notoriously crowns with both the classics, and trendy new and surprising toppings —like fior di latte (cows milk mozzarella cheese), fried purple potato chips, and parmigiana cheese fondue. If you’re not craving pizza, the escarole calzone with black olives, capers, smoked provola, and pecorino cheese is an excellent choice. This pizzeria also makes great, classic Neapolitan fried treats, like crocché, frittatina, and montanara. I usually order an assortment for a delicious start to the meal. Open daily from 12:30 pm-3:30 pm, 7-12:30 pm. Piazza Vittoria, 8, 80121 Napoli NA, tel: 39 081 1875 4037 – $$
